Winter is here!

Now that it looks like winter is finally showing up, it's important to take a little time to get your equipment ready. Taking a few preventative steps now can save you a big chunk of change in the spring. Here are some simple suggestions that don't take a huge amount of time or cost much money.

Storage:
Store your equipment somewhere under cover. A shed or garage is best, but a simple tarp will do the trick if it is secured properly.  Fitted water-proof covers can be purchased at Bi-Mart or you can order one from eBay or Amazon.

Fuel:
  1. Fill your fuel tank completely with non-ethanol fuel (available at Mid-State Co-op in Ellensburg).

  1. Use a fuel stabilizer, we recommend Sea Foam brand (follow the directions on the can for quantities).

  1. Run the engine long enough to ensure the carburetor has the fuel in it with the stabilizer.

Battery:
  1. Remove battery and fully charge for storage. It’s important to use an appropriate charger for the battery. Small batteries such as those found in motorcycles and ATV’s should not be charged at a rate greater than 2 amps. The battery can be left in the vehicle if the vehicle is stored somewhere that will not freeze, but terminals should still be disconnected.

  1. Store your battery somewhere cool but will not freeze. For best results, battery voltage should be checked periodically and battery charged if needed. Never let the battery completely discharge.

Tires:
  1. Check tire pressure before storage. Tires will naturally lose 1-2 psi per month.

  1. Periodically check tires while in storage and add air as needed. Never leave a tire flat while on the vehicle. Permanent damage to the tire and the tube can result.

  1. If possible, elevate vehicle so that tires are off the ground, this will prevent “flat spots” and premature tire wear.

Coolant/Antifreeze:
  1. If your vehicle is equipped with a radiator check to make sure the system is properly filled. NEVER FILL YOUR RADIATOR OR COOLANT RESERVOIR WITH WATER.

  1. Coolant freeze point should also be checked. The tool for this is available at Bi-Mart or any auto parts store. If your coolant freezes it can cause catastrophic engine damage.
